Making the Right Move

Considering a Continuing Care Retirement Community during COVID-19

For many seniors and their families, health and well-being has always been a top priority when choosing a retirement community. COVID-19 has heightened many of these concerns. While questions on these topics should indeed be driving conversations, they should not prevent you from considering a move into a community that is the right fit for you.

As a non-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), Saint Mary’s Home of Erie has a long history of placing the health and well-being of our residents at the core of our mission – a focus that is especially true this year. Saint Mary’s responded immediately to COVID-19 and worked quickly to implement preventive measures that are being practiced by residents and employees alike, such as daily temperature screenings, limiting visitors and non-essential personnel, frequently cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces, requiring universal masking, social distancing and having a plan in place to conduct routine testing and contact tracing. All along, Saint Mary’s has made keeping families informed of our actions an important part of our response through regular and transparent communication.

Knowing that precautions are in place means you can focus on the other important benefits of a CCRC. Someone is available twenty four hours seven days a week as part of an interdisciplinary care team that makes sure every resident receives the personalized care they need – including a well-balanced diet, assistance with personal care and monitoring changes in health. This relieves a great amount of stress on caregivers, especially right now, who might be overwhelmed trying to care for a loved one on their own.

Living among a group of peers is also a huge benefit. Even with social distancing measures in place, our employees have been working hard to find creative ways to safely engage residents – something many seniors lack when living alone. Plus, with a number of amenities on our campuses such as beauty and barber services, a library, lounges, beautiful grounds and an onsite chapel for religious services, living at Saint Mary’s means you can continue living the lifestyle you want while limiting your risk of community exposure.

With one move, you have access to the full continuum of care you need now and peace of mind about the care you might need in the future – all while remaining in the Saint Mary’s community.
